Benefits of Biomass Briquettes

Benefits of Biomass Briquettes

Biomass Briquettes:

The Biomass briquettes are made from agricultural residues. They can be divided into two groups; crop residues briquettes and agro-industrial residues briquettes.

The major crop residues produced in Kenya are straws of paddy, wheat, millet, sorghum, pulses, oil seed crops,
maize stalks and cobs, cotton and mustard stalk, sugarcane trash, leaves, fibrous materials, roots,
branches and twigs with different sizes, shapes, forms and densities.

The agro-industrial residues are rice husk, groundnut shell, cotton waste, coconut shell, tamarind shell, mustard husk, coffee
husk, Cassava peel, bagasse etc.

In replacing fossil fuels like gas, kerosene, diesel etc., & thermal applications, Biomass briquettes are used as the best alternatives to lignite, coal and charcoal. Also known as €œWhite Coal€, green charcoal, bio briq,  the Biomass briquettes are none polluting, non-conventional, biodegradable in nature, economical and renewable source of energy. Biomass briquettes have bulk density (800 Kg/m3) and high specific density (1200Kg/m3) as compared to 60 to 180 Kg/m3 of loose biomass.

Benefits of Biomass Briquettes:

Efficient: Saving in Transportation, Storage and Maintain 90 % of waste volume can be reduced. Briquettes transformed by biomass waste increase density of biomass in bulk quantity, thus costs of storage, maintaining & transportation is reduced by almost 10 times, to make storage and transportation easier than fossil fuels. Various other fuel types which are quite expensive, are harmful and difficult to handle. Biomass briquettes have a long shelf-life  and can be produced in a variety of sizes.

Pollution: Briquettes are pollution free and immeasurably cleaner than other alternative fuels – especially coal,  when burned, the briquettes do not pollute the environment.

Efficiency: Burned efficiently in a slow and controlled manner, Biomass briquettes cause high bulk density & lower ash and moisture content. To replace fossil fuels and charcoal completely, Utility Industries are majorly using biomass briquettes. They have higher calorific values.

Cost: Biomass briquettes, compared to the traditional fuels, are economically cheaper.

Quality & Clean Fuel: Biomass Briquettes is a very clean fuel and has stable consistent quality.

Eco-Friendly: Biomass briquettes are produced from recycled waste in the environment. The process of collection the raw materials promotes environmental cleaning, protection and conservation. They are 100% organic.

  • Other benefits include:

    A higher practical thermal value.
Low ash content at 5-8% as compared to coal 25 – 45%.
    Uniform combustion.
    No fly ash.
    Ideally sized for complete combustion.
Ease of handling, storage and transportation due to its size and regularity of shape.
